There’s nothing quite like an ice rink to get you in the festive spirit and the rink at Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park is hard to beat. It’s the largest open air ice rink in London offering all-day skating for well over 3 million visitors.
This year Arena Group commissioined us to build the Winter Wonderland temporary ice rink substructure, along with several other temporary structures including a viewing platform, glass and steel handrails and public access ramps.
We built the 37 x 52 m temporary ice rink substructure on location in front of Hyde Park’s iconic Victorian bandstand using Layher System Scaffolding. To keep it stable, the substructure was first elevated 2 meters above ground level and reinforced with some all important edge protection.
Once the temporary ice rink substructure and the base were in place, it was time for the chillers, generators, buffer tanks and hoses to do their thing and create some ice!
Once the ice had set, we got busy installing the ice rink’s glass balustrade and stainless-steel handrails, which we placed around the circumference of the rink. Our temporary glass and stainless-steel handrails not only enhance the look of any temporary structure, but they ensure compliance with all current legislation and guidelines – giving perfect peace of mind for public safety.
In addition to the ice rink substructure, handrails and balustrades, we provided a temporary viewing platform adjacent to the rink. We also provided two temporary public access ramps for access to the zamboni and medical centre. The ramps were built using Layher System Scaffolding which is light, strong and easy on the eye – great for maintaining the right visual aesthetic.
